Leigh_Morgan_120x92Leigh Morgan's name has almost coalesced with house music. During more than 10 years of sustained and purposeful work, he was brought together with many great names. The real turning point in his life was in 1999, when he became the new resident of 'Urbantorque' nights at Club Heaven. He met there such guys as Dave Angel, Lee Buridge, Craig Richards, Adam Freeland, Steve Lawler, Danny Rampling, Danny Howells, or Terry Francis. In the same year he played at the Essential Christmas Party 99 with Pete Tong, Pete Heller and other big names. One year later Leigh was DJing in the Ericcson tent at the Homelands 2000, and on Radio One Sound Stage at the Mardi Gras, where he was Danny Rampling's and Judge Jules' warm-up DJ. Since then, of course, he continued to stay close to the fire, he already had 3 gigs in our country too, hopefully not the last time.

You have been in the scene for a long time and if I know well, you always prefered house music. So my first questions is, what does music, especially house genre mean for you?

I’m in to all styles of music really, so I don’t limit myself to house music alone. Music should have a message and invoke a feeling within the listen, that’s what it’s all about for us.

Your carrier is quite long and you got in touch with the best DJs in the World. Which was your best and worst experiences during this time?

Playing at Cielo in New York was probably my best DJ experience, it’s the perfect space and sound system for the kind of house music I play, and a great knowledgable crowd. I think for any DJ, playing to an empty space has to be the worst thing, and I’ve done that plenty of times in the past!

If I’m right, you have a university graduate. What else would you do now if you hadn’t got into the music and clubbing life?

That’s correct, I was planning on studying to become a physiotherapist, but in the end music became the career goal rather than just a pastime for me.

And you also had an own label, the Sub Rossa. Why did you finish that project?

Simply put, I just didn’t have the time, I started as a creative outlet for other sounds, but it just fizzle out when I didn’t have the time to dedicate to it.

What is the aim of The Askesian Society that you established with Patrick McCourt?

The Askesian Society was an outlet for myself and Patrick to experiement and make music, it was shortlived in the end, as we now live 200 miles away from each other, maybe it will come back one day.

How did you get to Urbantorque Records?Leigh_Morgan_350

I’d been working with Jason Moore (owner of Urban Torque) for a number of years, Djing, etc at his nights, Urban Torque was a originally a club night, then after a while Jason wanted to resurect the name in to a label, so that’s really how it began.

What’s your task at the label:

I manage the day to day affairs of the label, and that really encompasses everything concerned with it, A&R, Admistration, Licensing, Promotion, web marketing etc etc, the list of tasks is very long!

You started the weekly Urbantorque Transmission Radio Show. On which radios can it be listened to?

Yes it’s been going for over 2 years now, and is grown all the time. Stations it can be heard on are Ibiza Global Radio, Pulse, Dance Radio, Club FM, Proton, plus a few more local stations. We haven’t started broadcasting in Asia yet, so it would be nice to grow it there also.

The label deals with other styles as well recently, like indie and the Diogenes Club. How did the label fans like it?

So far I think the more alternative music we have been releasing has generally gone down well, so we hope that continues with the new music we have coming.

Do you continue this styles?

We’ll continue with releasing music that we like, regardless of the style, obviously there are certain genres which are just not in to etc.

It seems like you try to find something new in music. What is the reason, did you tire of deep and house music?

We never tired of house music, it’s in our history and roots. We’ve always wanted to broaden out remit and try new styles so this is just the start of that process, good music is good music, and we want to stand for something more than throw away club music which blights so much of our scene.

You have been in Hungary a few times. What do you think about the Hungarian club scene? How do you like young people here?

We have done about 3 parties in Budapest and just outside of the city and they have all been great, cool people who know their music, so we’ve always had a great time, and we certainly want to come back soon.

When are you coming next? Is there a plan or any invitation?:D

Unfortunately not, it’s been over a year now since we were last there, lets hope someone wants to throw and UrbanTorque party soon over there!

I suppose lots of people send you demos and records. How do you decide which ones are suitable for the label?

Simply, do we love it, that’s the only necessity, if myself and Jason love it we’ll try to pick it up, doesn’t matter if it’s someone unknown or a well known artists, all about the music at the end of the day.

I think there is no Hungarian record at your label yet. Do you know Hungarian producers? Do you have a favourite one or whose music you like to play?

I am aware of Hungarian producers, and there has been some nice music on the Made Inn label, I’m probably playing music by hungarians but I’m not aware of it, so much music is promo’d everyweek, it’s difficult to know the people behind the music!

In the end of the interview, as usual, I ask you about the future. What releases and gigs are planned from you and from the label?

Label wise, more band projects, more alternative music, along side the house music that we love. New website is in development, so we are hoping that will be up and running by the end of the year. We’ll be continuing with our residency in Belfast next years, plus much much more!
