If  I say that K-Bana Feat. OB - 'True To You', a fan will know what it is. Cheer, easy days, peaceful life, party, friends, relaxing... etc... I could count many more characteristics of this song, but one thing is sure, it's a special track. K-Bana (Chris Tomsett) a 26 year old great producer who is addicted to the deep. From his D.U.S.K.-Picture Me Falling remix, that was made in 2005, he arrived to his real own style that could be called simply Deephouse.

Your first record came out at Duffnote label only 4 years ago, which made your way and you became well-known very fast. Which is your favourite own work?

My favourite production so far is probably K-Bana Feat OB ’True To You”. It was a work in progress for a long time. I started it back in 2004 and it took me a further 3 years to get the vocal i wanted and all the lyrics together. It means alot to me as it came from the heart. In my opinion not enough music is made in this way, and therefore it becomes almost throw away in the digital age. Also i am a particular fan of quality deep house vocals, if u can get it right then they stand the test of time.

Have you planned your career deliberately?

Not really, i have guidelines to where i want to go. But in this industry and how its changed since i started, my plans have had to evolve. To produce good quality deep/electronic music, and get a solid reputation in a set genre, isnt enough these days. Theres so much music out there that you really have to get your name heard, above the rest. Using all forms of promotion you can. The best ive found is getting signed to a new label in a different territory, it opens you up to people who may not have heard of you, and reafirms you with the people who have.

How much does music take your everyday life? Do you do it for living or do you have any other civil job?

Music is my life really, its a bit clichy. But its true. It has to be in this game. Currently i do it every day all day. Im lucky enough to do this. However in the past i have had to do other jobs to keep a roof over my head.

Tell me, please, what’s your proper position at Duffnote, as I’m right, you are a member of the label since your record was released there, aren’t you? I conclused it from your e-mail address.

Well its a bit blurry. I do work for all the labels, weither it be fun admin stuff, or producing and helping get other music signed in. Theres alot of work involved in running a label.

I reckon it didn’t happened accidentaly that you started at Duffnote, as Mark and Richard and also you are from K-Bana_01.jpgChichester. How long have you known each other?

It wasnt an accident. More luck i guess.. I actually rang Dan because id noticed that Duffnote was in my local city of Chichester, and i had some demos to play them. After meeting Dan and chatting with him, i ended up helping to sell vinyl and meeting Rich and Mark that way. So all in all i have known the guys about 5 years now. Wow time flys..

You had releases at Deepology Records as well. I think the Russian colleagues created a really good label during the last few years. How do you like them?

I really like Deepology. I actually heard the name and sound through Mark, he played me some stuff and i was really in to it. At the time I was looking for a home for my ’Somthings Different Ep” and ended up sending it to Alex, who then released it. I owe alot to them as they opened me up to Eastern Europe. Where most of my musi seems to be played and bought.

Tell us some good moments of your musical career that you like to remember to. Behind the decks or somewhere else.

Well recently i came back from playing in Tbilisi Georgia, @ G.U.R.U Club. That was an amazing experience and i have to say, even though the travelling was hell. I enjoyed every minute of it.. The venue is amazing and the crowd was totally up for it. Id recommend anyone going there. I hope to go back out there and see the guys again soon.

Lots of things have been changed in this genre. Sorry for saying that but I think England lost its leadership in deeper styles. What’s your opinion? Where are the best producers from nowadays?

Yes i agree lots has changed in the industry. I think due to Beatport and other digital mp3 sites it has made music available to producers all over the world. Along with this it is even easier to produce good music, all you need is a mac and logic 8 and your away!

I have to say some of my fave producers come from the most obscure places nowadays. But my overall fave producer is still probably Jimpster, hes the daddy of the sound i strive to produce and hes from the UK. Turkey and the Netherlands are producing some great producers as are Russia, i really do get music from all over the place. I dont think it really matters where your from, aslong as its deep. ;)

The website of Duffnote gets ready quite slowly. When can we see it?

Ahh yes this is somthing that i agree has taken some time coming, However its on its way very soon. It should be up and running with a shop by the end of the year. The shop bit is the part thats taken the longest to get sorted. It will include all our material, with some exclusives that are only available with us. Somthing not to be missed!! So keep our eyes peeled.

K-Bana.jpgYou are also a DJ. Which does give you more, DJing or producing?

Yes i am a DJ, i actually started to DJ first aged 14.. So ive been doing it 12 years. I love playing out and interacting with the crowd, its where u get first hand reaction to your music. However in recent years i have been in the studio alot more, making music which i also enjoy alot. Hmm.. thats a hard one, think DJing just edges it. On the fact you get to see nice places and meet new people. Can get very lonely in a studio..

Maybe you think I’m fool but I checked on Google Maps how far are you from Budapest. It’s 1791 kms and 16 hours 56 mins, but we can chat easily thanks to the internet. Could you imagine the world without internet?

God no.. The internet is how i work. Without it i couldnt send my music out, get gigs, promote myself, hear new music, speak to people all over the world, the list is endless. It has totally changed the insdustry, and made music and networking so much easier.

Please, introduce your hometown, how is Chichester?

Its a Ancient Roman City, with a Cathedral. A very nice place to live, very quiet. Only downside is there arent any decent clubs there..

Can you produce music in any situation or do you need special state, calmness, preparation? How do you work?

Yes pretty much. Obviously i need to have my music head on, so i can produce. But other than that i can work anywhere. I tend to work alone in my studio with Logic 8 and my Mac, and some outboard gear of course. I have recently switched from Cubase in the last year because so many other people in my field of production use it and in the end i caved in. And to be fair getting a Mac has been the best thing i ever did. The amount of times ive had to reboot compared to my pc are minimal. Its a very reliable machine..

How productive do you think yourself?

Id like to think im quite productive. Im generally quite easily inspired, but i do get my mental blocks like everyone. Working from home can be very distracting, especially with an Xbox close by. I tend to use it to wind down after a heavy session, and maybe a break to re inspire me.

The Hand Job is a really good track. Is there any applicants for it?

Thank you. Hand job is part of my new ’Trust Me EP’. There are another two tracks on it. Currently it maybe getting on a Sub Label of Plastic City, but thats not confirmed yet. So i guess il have to wait and see.

What are your other plans for the future?

My plans for the next 6 months are to get as many quality releases under my belt as possible, along with DJing more, i want to get more of a balance. To help me grow as an artist. In that time id love to come and visit Budapest as so many of my fellow producer friends tell me its a wicked place to play as the people are so nice.
