| Interview - Sebastian Davidson (+mix) | ||||

Sebastian Davidson is one of the most important musicians these times. His records give a base and direction for the future music. Many things come out from the interview, also some Hungarian related ones. And probably we can enjoy the deep-tech-prog house music a'la Sebastian in Hungary as well soon.
My first question is how long have you been dealing with music, and why did you choose electronic type?
My first experience with house music was at the age of 11. I’ve been djing since 1992 but didn’t start producing until February 2006. Why electronic? Because of the energy electronic music gives me!
What do you like more, djing, playing for people or producing yout own tracks?
I like producing very very much, but so far nothing beats travelling the world, meet people and play for wonderfull people! What a job!
Your name
became popular thanks to your ’Bondi’ and ’Nightbird’ tracks. You mixed
Easy, it’s the music I like most! My dj sets range from techhouse to progressive elements.. In my sets you can expect everything between deep house and progressive and that’s the way I wanted to produce like that as well. I like to produce the style between, sometimes a litlle deeper, sometimes a little harder but always with a Davidson twist!
In your opinion which way the scene is going to? What kind of records will give the base of future music?
It´s nice that techno, house and progressive are coming together in the modern sound from nowadays. Producers like Stimming (also under his alias Orlie & Martie he releases wonderfull progressive orientated music), H.O.S.H. are the next generation. It’s future house, mashing up minimal, trance and techno. And I’m relay happy with that!
Such big names make remixes for you like Manuel Tur. Do you know each other well or are you only in business relationship?
Some remixers are just businness related and fixed by the label, but there are some friendship related ones as well like Olav Basoski and Eelke Kleijn.
And you also get many remix requests. You work together with Scope, Robert Owens, Cass and the Physics. What kind of method do you make remixes? What are the most important things in a track that can captivate you?
I
absolutely need emotion in a tune. A nice vocals will help as well. Most time I
only use one or two elements of the original and build something completely
new. Hous eis a feeling, and that works the same in the studio. :)
I like to listen indie, folk pop music besides dance music. I’m a big fan of a band from Australia called Angus & Julia Stone. Also adoring Jamiroquai for it’s funk!
I’ve heard you have links also with Kinky Vinyl label. What are your tasks there exactly?
I did 4 releases at Kinky Vinyl and did some parties for them as well, but im not involved in their compagny or else.
You are a founder of the Holland Club Pepper. How long has it been running?
This November we celebrate Club Pepper’s 5th anniversary. As anyone working in nightlife knows, that's like an eternity in club years! We can't believe it's been that long since we first started, way back in 2003 on a Saturday night. To celebrate this milestone, we're throwing 3 party's in november with dj’s like Jimpster, Phonique, Jerome Sydenham, Rene Amesz and Stimming as guests!
You are just a resident DJ there, or do you have any promoter tasks as well? I mean choosing the guest DJs, booking, etc.
I
am resident as well as promotor. So yeah im in the position to invite any affordable
dj I like! :)
What do you prefer to play vinyls or CDs? Or do you use any other softwares on your gigs?
Nowadays it’s just cd’s but I’m really looking into the possibilities for 2009 to play with Ableton as well. I think it’s quite interesting. But that’s future and we live now!
Where do you
play int he close future? What are your plans?
On productional level im currently working on an EP together with multi-talent Estroe. She recently did work for Bedrock and Conaisseur records, so looking forward to our result! Also started a new project with a very talented young producer from my hometown Groningen, which will be more progressive tech house orientated. Also working on remixes for Deep & Suga, Spiritchaser, Johan Ilves and Chris from the Quasar at the moment. Theres a few other remixes that are waiting to come out. And last but not least of course DJing here, there and everywhere! Swiss, Hungary, Estonia and the UK are coming up next!
Music is a perpetual love for all of us who work in this field. As I made this interview with you, I could feel that you love what you do as well. What do you think, how is Sebastian Davidson going to be 20 years later?
Shit, 20 years? I’m 51 then! Hopefully an established producer, with my own label and camp of industry recognised artists. And I hope I have left Holland by then and live in Canada, somewhere near the Rocky Mountains, cutting wood, make a fire, cook some fresh salmon and say hi to a grizzley who’s walking by…
