Here’s a short interview with a guy whose name may sound familiar for us here, in Hungary, just like in America or Australia. Though he hasn’t had too much gigs yet in the world, but his music is broadcasted in different radios… also on Justmusic.fm. But not many people know who is Mark Youssef exactly. Well, let’s get some brief infos about him.
So let’s start with Justmusic.fm as we mentioned it. How did you get in contact with the team? When was your first mix on the radio and how often can we hear you?
It was started in 2005 with my dear friend and supporter Dandy. I know him from long time ago. My show on Justmusic Fm is called Obligation Show and you can hear it once a month. I was a guest also in Dandy’s and Chriss’ Monitor Show.
You have other internet radio shows too. The Obligation on Party107 and Sleek on Frisky. How and when did they start?
Yeah, the same show Obligation Show broadcasted on Party107
and ProClubben fm in
How do you choose the DJs you invite?
I choose my guests from the labels i was worked with, or invite my DJ and producer friends.
Tell us a few things about yourself. As we know you were born in Australia but now live in Cairo. Why did you move to Egypt?
Yes, I am half Egyption half Austarlian. But now I live in Cairo,Egypt, and work as a Marketing Manager in spare parts For Cars Company. It's a family business. I lived in Sydney for a while but I had to get back to my family's country to work.
So you spent most of your life in Australia? You were a resident DJ for The Quest club in Queensland. How is the scene there and in Egypt? What are the diffences?
Actaully no, I haven't spent too much time in Sydney. I’ve been living there for like a year. But yes, I was a resident dj of The Quest in Queensland. The scene there is too hot as many people know that. In Egypt, the scene is very good in Sharm but in Cairo we still have to make much much more clubs and events as well.
Did you or do you have a residency in Cairo?
Yes, from 1997 to 1999 I was the resident of Aida Club Resort, and in 1999 and 2000 at Club Sandorini, on the North Coast. Then i had to stop playing there because of my work and studies. I was graduated as Software Engineer. So actually i stopped dealing with music for like 5 years and I got back to it in 2005.
I met electronic music in 1995, my greatest influence is made by Paul Oakenfold. From that time I was listening to it all time. Then in 1996 I started to play with vinyls and I was a partner on a project called The I Man, with Dj Alive. He (Ahmed) was one of my friends in cairo but after he moved to Toronto in 2000, we finished this cooperation.
What genres did you tried until you found your recent style?
I listened to all kind of music, start with rock to heavy metal, then R&b, but in 1996 I found my way to electronic music. First I played trance along with prog house but for now I am into deep house, electronica and prog house as well. It depends on my mood :)
Are you working on your own music? Tracks or remixes?
Yes, actaually I am working together with my friend, Hassan Rassmy. Our project’s called OverHear. We are working on some stuff now, and in the next few months we gonna release some remixes and some tracks. I hope you will like them.
What are your plans for the future? Will you move back to Australia or try to make a career in Egypt? Maybe anywhere else?
For now as I said we are doing our best in our new project (OverHear) and I am working hard on promote myself more and more. About moving back to Australia, I say no. I think not at this time because I have my „civil” work here in Cairo as i said in my family's company, and don't have too much time for moving a lot for now.
Then we wish you good luck for your project in Egypt and your radio shows. And thank you for the mix and infos.
