| Interviews - International Interview | |||
Thistime we turned to England a bit. It’s a shame, but honestly, we couldn’t hear too musch about Spiritchaser before, though many of us heard their tracks at parties. Well, after we listened to their works and realized who they are, decided to ask them for an interview to make their music better-known… maybe you can hear them live in Hungary soon… who knows?! :) So now you can read about Richard Earnshaw and Mark Bamford, the Spiritchaser or Orekid, straight from nice Chichester.
When I was reading your bio, a sentence made me smile. You discovered you have a similar view in a pub „whilst supping a pint of best”. I can imagine the situation… J So how was it, how did you meet?
Well, Bamo was Djing on that fateful night, whilst Richard was drinking at the bar. Their eye’s and ears met across a crowded dance floor, and the rest as they say is history!
How did you get in contact with electronic music?
In terms of listening and appreciating elecronic music, it goes back to the 80’s (and even the 70’s) checking out the likes of Human League, New Order, Depeche Mode, Vangelis to name a few. The more Club based electronic music came into the fold in and around 1993 when Bamo went to Ibiza on holiday and came back 6 months later having played a summer residency at the Milk Bar.
Since 2003 you had plenty of releases at different labels. What was the motivation to start producing?
The production side of things stems back to the very early nineties when Richard first got a computer and the means to make music on it. Already a classically trained musican, combining both this and Bamo’s experience in club Djing, the two elements helped make sense of it all so it was a natural progression to start making music and hopefully have it played to audiences all over the world.
You are also recording as ’Orekid’. What is it exactly? What’s the difference between Spiritchaser and Orekid?
There is no real difference other than Orekid is more song based and not so „big room” club music. It incorporates more live elements and is more suited to the bar vibe/living room.
Guess was started in 2005 with our good friend Danny
Jones (who was already running Duffnote with Richard) with
our first release „RE-Intro EP”. Quite simply, we wanted a home for the deeper
sound after parting ways with the label we were working with. It was also an
What’s your biggest success?
We treat every record as a success, and if it sells well then that’s an extra pint of beer at the pub! Seriously, the fact that we’re making music and being part of something with so many other talented people is in itself a success.
What about djing? Do you have a residency somewhere? Any gigs abroad?
Well the funny thing is, after years on the decks, Bamo took some time out to concentrate on the production with Rich..... whilst Rich who was also establishing himself in the more soulful house genre, started Djing all over the place. Now that we’re more settled with our Spiritchaser sound, both in and out of the studio, we feel that now is a good time to express this more through our Djing.
England was and I think it is still the base of underground house music. What’s your opinion about it?
It’s interesting that you say that. And equally as interesting to see how may more think that. In one way or another we travel all the world and we see so many thriving underground dance music scenes etc... Travelling has become so much cheaper these days so that in itself is broadening the possibilties for DJ’s & labels alike, not to mention the way that digital music distribution has opened up the market on a global basis making it easier for everyone, from any country to buy and play the same music. It’s the people and the passion for the music that makes a party..... no matter where it is.
What do you think, do English producers/DJs have better chances to reach big successes than young talents from other countries?
This is definately not the case. In fact many of the artists that have been signed to Guess (and it’s sister Label, Duffnote) have been from outside the UK. We agree that before the availability and accessibilty of the internet it was more difficult for everybody to reach an audience. This is no longer the case, which can only be a good thing. This global success for producers has inevitibly rubbed off onto the DJ circuit .
It’s a look back at the last few years of our music, both original productions and remixes. But to add something a little special we’ve also written some exclusive music especially for the album, including some re-edits of some our older tracks, none of which have ever been released before. So it’s kind of a mixture of a compilation and an artist album! We’re looking at the first part of next year but the release date is yet to be confirmed.
Are you working on something new at the moment? What are your future plans?
We have a number of new projects on the go, kicking things off is our new „Spiritlevel EP” series, the first of which will be out in the next few weeks. We’re also putting together plans to produce another album which we hope will be ready sometime next year. Put simply, we just want to continue writing music, Djing and supping the odd pint of best of course ;)
