Stone_100

In the heyday of Pacha I heard Stone playing many times. He was spinning the best progressive records with incredible unworldliness, and the crowd wasn’t ungrateful. A few years later we met on a boat on the river Danube. At first sight he hasn’t changed, but the music he played was captivating. Genuinely deep.

But what’s happened during the last 10 years?

Your name has become inseparable from Strictly! How did it begin?

I fell in love with this whole thing.

I knew there’s a guy (Blueboy), who deals with music. One day I saw him on the street, went to him and said I wanted to learn it. He didn’t ask who I was, or what I wanted. Just said: ’ok, then you will come with me to Romkert in Szombathely on Friday.” From that point I always went with Pityke, and got to know the team of that time, with Zsazsa.

And what motivated you to start spinning?stone_inside

It just simply came to be. I visited many parties and always got close to the DJ. I would watch what he was doing and the reaction of the crowd. I liked it more and more.

I started to buy records, met many people in the stores, later we organized parties together and invited all of our friends. Many people asked me for mixes. Since then there has been no slowing down.

Why does every DJ need to produce music nowadays? Is it a kind of trend?

If you only spin records and don’t produce, you won’t have so good a chance to achieve success. Lately anybody could make a mix. If somebody is talented and skilled, that’s much rather expressed in his/her own music than in a mix. And producers have better chances to get good contacts as well.

Famous and popular DJs all had written music first, then became DJs.

Tthat’s probably why everybody gets into it.

The public is always favouring the same old ’top DJs’ although many of them can’t come up with any new or unique things. What do you think, isn’t it time for a serious generation change?

The problem is that a DJ might gain clout not from his music, rather contacts and position.

Changing the generation is not up to young talents.

stoneWhat was your biggest experience as a DJ or a producer?

I could mention some parties as a DJ. I loved Pacha, where we used to play every month. All of our parties were perfect there. Full-house, great people, fantastic atmosphere, professional sound system, craziness. But the most memorable was when we played together with Quivver at Dokk Club. It was amazing!

As a producer I’ve got two releases on the Mechanism label, and I received very good feedback also on an international level. They are still many people’s favourites.

Your style went through quite a strong change. What was the reason?

I’m changing, and my music is changing with me. When progressive music appeared in our circle, lots of people began to write tracks, many new labels were formed. This wasn’t bad until terrible sounding music without meaning was spread. After a time I couldn’t find good records for myself, because all music seemed to be the same. I was fed up, and turned to deep house as it wasn’t so general. Since then I play almost only this kind of music.

You started DJing nearly 10 years ago. Which way are you headed?

If somebody is a music fan, always search for new artists, new sounds. The nicest thing about this is that you can discover new things by way of music every week. New records, new mixes, new music. I think this is endless in my life.

More and more DJs use some accessories. What’s your attitude to these newstone_backside technical items?

I have thoroughly familiarized myself with them. I’m one of those who try to use vinyls the longest. For me CD was so strange, I thought I would never play with them. In fact I fell in love with vinyl-player. You can simply feel it.

Gradually DJs will only click. It’s very, very strange for me.

If Strictly! wasn’t around, then…

I wouldn’t play.

I started with that team, everything around me evolved from there. I played without them a few times, but it wasn’t the same. But of course I gladly play anywhere. I know that I’m invited to parties because people like what I do.

Are there any people or things that changed your life?

People come and go.

Sometimes I meet people who bring changes with themselves, and also things happen that make changes in my life. But nothing made important impression on me.

Crowds go mad for yout sets... although I think gleaming success doesn’t interest you.

I don’t know if there are any DJs who want only gleaming success. If so, they had better turn away from this whole thing. Pop stars can ’shine’, but not us. In contrast to them we never play the same set. People know what they will hear on a concert and sing the songs. But it’s different in our case. I usually take around 100 records with me, and  until I get to the club, I don’t know at all what’s gonna be the first track I spin.

A DJ shouldn’t play only just to be a star.
