| Interviews - Hungarian DJs & Producer | |||
Our friend, Jay Lumen has been enthusiast of music in all his life. In primary school he had already got the first dose, later contiunued as a choralist, and got acquaintance with the violin. Then a day he met with electronic genre and made a close friendship with it. So he not today started to deal with music, and maybe he has a long way to go. The next interview is, - as u could guess it - about him. I would like to start with a quite stereotyped question, would you tell a few things about how you started, what were your first tries?
In fact I met with music when I was a little child, as I spent 8 years in a primary conservatory. I think this is what decided I will never could exclude music of my life. I used to play the violin too... I didn’t like it... I started to play the piano :)ust by myself, but it’s long time ago. I was also a choralist, on the Music Academy as well. So music always was around me. Producing and djing interest me since my secondary-school ages. When i got my first computer and synthetiser, I started to make own music.
I was searching the net about you, but i realized you are from that group of hungarian djs, who are more well-known abroad than here. I couldn’t find too much thing about you. I think hungarian electronic music scene should wake up and give more chance for djs like you. What do you think about it?
I’m glad you think it this way and thanks in the name of the other djs as well, but unfortunately it’s not my task to make decision in this question. I wish it could depend on me... But I think we are on a good way and changing is necessary. Promoters prefer to invite djs who are producers too. I think the crowd wants that, because people know and (normally) like these artists due to their own music.
Let’s stay at the industrious djs. There are so many hungarian talents whose names are known abroad, but still haven’t broken through. I mean none of them has become famous yet like a Cattaneo or any other international star. What do you think would it be happened once?
The secret is the ’management’... This is what’s still missing here. We don’t have a professional backoffice, which could completely help hungarian djs/producers on the way to be an international star... but once we’re gonna have. And foreign promoters are getting more interested in hungarian producers. I’m optimist. I’m sure we’ll have hungarian successes on this field too... Anyway it’s funny you mentioned Hernan, because he usually use my latest release in his sets and it’s also in his 2006 december top chart... http://www.hernancattaneo.com/charts.php?id=1143
I think this genre became
successfully international, I mean there isn’t an english or
I think nowadays it’s not true. There are so many talented producers from all over the world and they gain foot. But of course it’s easier to start a career in some countries, because they have serious electronic music culture with long history, and perfect background to find the talents of the future. For example in London there is at least one talent scout competition in a month, where beginner djs get a chance. But I think nobody’s at a disadvantage... so stick it in Hungarians! ;)
A lighter question. What’s your opinion about the situation of electronic music nowadays?
I think unfortunately electronic music scene is increasingly ’washy’ in these days. There are so many digital labels, and only those don’t make new label, who don’t want to, that’s why lots of amateur releases are coming out. But at the same time it’s more colourful, because this situation makes many interesting new sounds as well, that otherwise maybe would be hidden. So nowadays this duality is typical, every dj needs to sit at the computer visiting the web-musicstores’ site to find the good tracks.
Let’s go back to you. Most of your records are full of tunes and emotion. How typical is it thee?
It’s typical as it comes from me. Usually in a situation or as a reaction for a feeling or mood, a tune comes into my head, and before I fall into sleep I hear them. I like to spice up my music with these nice tunes, and I think this could come from my soul. But of course I don’t drop tears for every sunset. :) Besides this you can find some harder remixes and tracks further on.
How is your relationship with the producer/dj mates?
I keep friends with djs in hungary and abroad as well. Here I have a good relationship with Snake Sedrick, Andro, Gensi (Add2Basket) and also Belocca. We have a lot of fun together and give idiot advices to each other. J And as a relaxation we make remixes for one another tracks.
You got me... I could say a lot of names. I think much of so many djs and producers, for example Hernan Cattaneo, Sander Kleinenberg or Matthew Dekay whose remixes and tracks are really good too. Nowadays I like also the South-American producers’ work. That’s fantastic as they mix the electro and progressive elements with tribal. I would like to spin any of them somewhere...
Which was your best party in your life and why?
There was an open-air place in Siófok, the Buddha Bar&Lounge, where I used to play with another dj on Wednesdays. One of these parties was my best, when the weather turned bad, but nearly 200 people stayed in the rain and the party went on till 5 am... It wasn’t an average experience, and not just because half of my cds have been sodden. :)
What does relaxation mean for you?
First the music, that’s why I do it. Besides it: films, sports, konzol????? games, chill out with friends.... and of course many parties....
Whithout talking about numbers, can you make a living by producing or do you have any other job? If yes, what do you do?
As a dj or producer you can get to a level where you can earn enough money. With some luck and good management you can get good money.... ok... with big luck.... :) But I don’t do that like I think many of us. The first thing is the love of music and the many-many positive reflections. That’s why I spend most of my freetime for this. At the moment as a civil I do marketing and client communication.
What do you wanna reach anyway, and what’s that you could get, you wouldn’t want anything more?
I’m not a typical resigner, so I think I would never stop. The most important is that I wanna get to as many places as I can, and let the people know my music...
How did you get in
contact with foreign online radios?
Almost in all cases the local programmakers or djs asked me to make a mix. Last time for example RPO (Rick Pier O'’eil) invited me to Frisky Radio. But also FM channels spin my tracks and mixes. Besides my monthly show at ADN Alternative, I’ll be on the French Galaxie FM soon, what is listened by more than 25 thousands people every day.
At last, what can we wait from you in the close future? Any gigs or releases?
In the last time I laid big stress upon studio works. These days I’m working together with a famous londoner singer girl, who has already appeared on the side of Pete Tong, the Flash Brothers or Chris Lake /... more info about this next time ;) / On 5th February a new track, the ’Way to Eternity’ is coming out from Baroque Records (Satoshi Tomiie, Luke Chable, Junkie XL, Mashtronic, etc....), and my second remix that I made for RPO asked by Garbage Records (Thomas Penton, Simon&Shaker). In the end of March or early April my EP will be expected with 3 fresh new own tracks released by the Lost Language label-giant, where all the big names have already come up. Many people asked me so I’d like to notice that my new track, called ’In the Shadow’ will be on this EP. Two of my releases will be able to find also on vinyl for those who like classic vinyl-sounds.
Anyway, enjoy listening to the music, and I hope we’re gonna meet somewhere for a good party.
