Interviews - Hungarian DJs & Producer
retroid_100

Adam Huszár, commonly known as „Retroid” was born in Hatvan  in 1983. Currently he lives in Gyöngyös while his studies tie him down in Dunaújváros. Since 1998 he has been composing music, but primarily his focus is on the directions of progressive and breaks.  Heaps of remixes and own tracks feature the main stations of his career. However he is a young man from our country who is hardly even known or just by a few. This rate is to be changed by the following interview.

My first question is quite regular: „-How did you get in touch with this style of music?”

About 8 years ago I got in touch with music composing. I started on my first PC with the program called „Fast Tracker”. At the time I did not really have a specific style as  I have listened to so many artists such as Members Of Mayday, Westbam, Paul Oakenfold, then I tried to follow the footsteps of BT in my music. At the beginning they affected me the most. It was about 3-4 years ago when I realized that my music actually belongs to the world of progressive. Inside of it I would like to underline breakbeat as the majority of the music I make.

As far as I remember it was about 1 year ago when I heard about you at the first while I was flicking through the website of Proton radio and the current remix competition caught my eye.  If my memories are right a remix of Deepsky was to be done , which in your case was so successful, that you won the prize. What happened after this?

That’s right! It was a Deepsky remix competition after which I met Ferenc Kocsis aka  FeralCode who collaborated in this competition and asked me to make a remix for his label.

Then we could discuss to release my own compositions. By now there are 3 tracks and many other remixes of mine released by FeralCode Records.  Besides I kept sending my records to different record companies and - parallel to the tracks released by Ferenc -  some other music of mine came out on Existence Records and on the British Composure Records.  After these things I got requests to make remixes for several record companies such as Ascension Records lead by Jeff Belfi or Native’s brand new Swordtail Records.

…and the first prize was – as I remember well- a Native Instruments stuff. How did you receive it?

The prize was a midi-keyboard and Native Instruments progies/processors.

(ha helyesen írtad progik, akkor progies, ha viszont procik akkor processors). I just won the local part of the competition which means I was not the winner of the absolute division, but the best Hungarian remixer. As a prize I got an M-Audio audiphile 192 soundcard which was offered by the Hungarian dealership of M-Audio.

So this competition had a Hungarian relation as well, right?

Yes, the Hungarian M-Audio supported the maker of the best local remix by this package.

Do you belong to the group of those young ones who are better known abroad thanretroid_001 here in their homeland? Are you looking for opportunities to break through here in Hungary or is it okay like that and you keep your eyes over the border?

This summer I started to work as a DJ seriously, that’s why I had no chance to show my works to the Hungarian youth yet . So here, in my homeland people neither really know my music nor what I play. At parties I prefer to play a bit more dynamic breakbeat, although I have quite a few favourite house performers too. Therefore I do not run away from playing house as well. There was great interest from abroad.... I would like to play in Hungary as much as I can, but naturally, abroad is among my goals too.

Are there any requests from abroad? If yes, where have you already been or played?

The answer is simple. There was a request and due to it I decided to start working as a DJ as well. I didn’t really promote myself in this field until now. Next year I might have more of a chance to make my way in this area too…hopefully.

What do you do when not music? Studies, school, you passed accountancy – as I see.

I study IT in college in Dunaújváros. Besides that, music is my hobby.

What are your parents’ and your private environment’s feedback about your results?

As for my parents, sometimes they support me, sometimes they don’t. Sometimes they consider it too much, however they are happy about the results I have achieved in music.

Throughout these years I got in touch with many people – DJs and producers - who love this kind of music what is more they support it. I have a very friendly relationship with many of them, but also I have many friends for whom this music is not in focus, though they accept and appreciate my work.

What is your opinion about today’s world of electronic music?

By now electronic music reached as far as that everything is released having a sound due to the vast numbers of digital label and hobby-musicians. At certain record companies it doesn’t even count what’s this music like at all. Nowadays if music has the smallest tone of electro then it is coming out from a digital label right away. It is hard to find good music.

retroid_002As I look around I find that the style of minimal is getting more and more highlighted (and - thank God - electro is getting faded out). How do you approach this concern? In which direction is you music heading?

I always look for tones in music in which I can feel myself raptured someway and in which I can hear something really unique or individual, no matter if the subject is house, break or some kind of tech. I love the good ones from minimal and of course I have favourites from other styles starting from rock as far as drum&bass. Although  breakbeat is the one being the closest to me as a music style, somehow I feel that it is getting lost in the chaos of styles and good break music or parties is/are becoming more rare.

It was interesting as you mentioned that there are plenty of inferior tracks, with which I totally agree. Can it lead us to the point – what I can see recently - that people just will be dissappointed in this style?

Unfortunately most people aren’t even aware of music styles which can be due to the mixture of tones, while on the other hand people consider music only as an opportunity to relax or have fun with which I agree.

Let’s return to FeralCode Records! What is your relationship like?

Fair enough, while this record company stands on its feet both in proper operation and correct business policy, what is more from these aspects sometimes it can overtake one or two larger foreign record companies. In January they will release a Clubbervision remix of mine which was made in the style of progressive break. And this thing is going to be continued in the future – I guess.

What do you do in the rest of your time if not music or school? Do you go out to party?

I rarely go to larger parties. Usually if a DJ/producer friend of mine invites me to his performance I go and listen to it. In general I go to breaks parties – I mean I would go but there are not mnay of them. From breaks I would highlight nuskool, techfunk, progressive - these are the main directions I pursue and enjoy at parties.

What are your recent works? What releases can be expected from you?

I spent last summer making an trip-hop/electronica album, which was made in collaboration with an American female singer and which is partially done, though we still have to work on it. In the past 2-3 months I have been working on progressive and on a bit more nuskool music. Soon we will be having the aforementioned Clubbervision remix released on FeralCode Records and I also will have a remix which was made for a Hungarian musician friend of mine called: Emotional Horizon  and which will be launched at Deepblue Records. I am planning to start up my own record company at the beginning of 2007, however I don’t want to say more about it.

This trip-hop sounds interesting. Was there someone who requested you to make it or it was your own idea? When and where can we hear it?

I always loved trip-hop / downtempo music. A few years ago I made a few of these types of tracks for PC Games (I have jobs like this right now too). With this I got the chance to make a real trip-hop album with a singer. The creation of the music based on a lot of thinking! Right now we are looking for a record company. Anyhow we had many positive critiques, of course some negative, analytical critique reached our doorstep as well while it seems there are few record companies interested in our material.

A regular question: what kind of programs do you use and how do you make the music itself? The basics or the melody is first?

I really do not have a stereotype method for this. If I can hear a good tone or I can put a base together I try to build the music around it.  However the the melody is the first step. Returning to programs I use FL Studio as a sequencer and software keyboards (Vst). Nowadays they are capable of sounding really good!

Finally, what would you like to tell about the mix made for this site?

I mixed 3 of my own and a few of my favourite tracks which are suitable for listening both at home and at patries. I hope you will enjoy it and hope that breakbeat will remain in the common thought as a music style and more and more people will get to know and love it.
