Tommy Nash_100.jpgThis week you can read the first part of a double interview, as Tommy Nash' and Christian Slater's names are almost one whole. These producers are on the way to top with rapid strides. They already have releases at labels like Cloud 9 Records or Global Underground, and had a chance to play at Creamfields Poland. So first let's read about Tommy Nash.

You may be the first producer who has been interested in electronic music for only two years, and already at the GU. But let’s start at the beginning.

Did your graphic studies help you to learn a music editor software?

Yes, for a while I wasn’t interested in music as I wanted to be a graphic artist before high school. Of course I had my favourite music and artists like everyone else, and later my interest towards this field increased. I got a very basic software, not like those we use nowadays, but it was good to learn the first steps. Most of the new softwares are very user-friendly though, it took me time to find out how to use, the availablities, methods. I think you can always find something new during using a software. And what about my graphical past? My graphic studies are still useful in the marketing.

What do you use for producing?

I started with Fruity to learn the basics. It wasn’t professional, but suitable for learn. Then I was using Reason for a long time. That’s still not enough if you wanna create professional music. Now I start to get familiar with Ableton and use another different programms as well.

Why did you choose this genre?

I felt there are so many possibilities in this genre. And I can be myself in it. I tried many different genres and create something independent that can’t be classified in any styles. This is a kind of learning method as producers walking through the styles. And of course artists get many influences… the trend, the audiance’s taste, the actual genres, his own taste and luck. If someone can mix these factors, they have bigger chance for success. But these are only a few elements, unbelievable how many things affect that who’s gonna be the winner or get in the spotlight. That’s how I felt the way during the last few years since i’m in the scene.

What did you listen to earlier? Did you have any favourite stars who you smile at now?

The first artist who made me pay more attention to electronic music was Daft Punk. I really liked their unique sounds and presentation. Then I had a trance period and later house music came. I listened to every kind of music which I could see fantasy in. I had lots of favourites who still make influences on me, like Daft Punk as I mentioned, Prodigy, Underworld, Paul Oakenfold, etc. They all make something unique. Nowadays the market is bigger and there are more artists, but you can find less quality work andTommy Nash.jpg performance.

Everybody’s taste changes, and maybe you smile at your old favourites. That’s a normal thing! :)

Is that true after a few months producing you had releases supported by The Flash Brothers and Antoine Clamaran?

At the beginning I enlisted to a German label where one of my works called ’Delight’ came out. It’s got somehow to The Flash Brothers later and they liked to play it. I got in contact with them and found the guys really friendly who supported and still support my tracks. This is very unusual among famous artists. I can thank them I could beleive that if I really want something and everything goes well behind me, I can reach it.

Your work got into Armin Van Buuren’s show quick, he spinned your ’Fever’ track in ASOT 236. After that such DJs played your music like Eelke Kleijn, Anil Chawla, DJ Tarkan. Nice list!

You can’t imagine how uplifting feeling if an elit DJ plays your track in a world famous show like A STATE OF TRANCE. It can really prove your professional calling, a real appreciation. The promo of ’Fever’ got to Armin thanks to Christian Slater. Honestly I’ve never thought it could be so successful! It’s a huge thing if such big DJs support and play your music like Armin after a short time. And that’s not all. It was played by Ernesto Vs Bastian, DJ Tarkan, Niklas Harding, Marcus Schössow and Fuzzy Hair. Other artists’ support always help your work and increase your resoluteness. And it was the same when I gained the support of Anil Chawla, Dale Anderson, Eelke Kleijn.

After that you had releases at the Greek Unlove Music and later the American Lyon Echo Recordings labels. It’s a little bit fast, isn’t it? :)

Thanks to the Flash Brothers one of my tracks, called ’Emotions’, got to the popular Greek house artist, Kevin Sunray. He’s already worked together with for example Richard Grey or Antoine Clamaran. And he signed me to his new Unlove Music label. Later I got in contact with an incredible talented Canadian growth artist, Lori J Ward. He is a really talented singer, artist and producer at the same time. Our common work called ’Emotions’ was released at the beginning of 2008.

Then one of my promos that was made together with Christian Slater got to the Lyon Echo Recordings in New York. They release records by Gareth Emery, Sied Van Riel, Joel Armstrong and Micah. We got a chance to work together with them that made us very happy. So that’s how things started on.

If I’m right here came Christian Slater (who you can read about next week in an interview). How long have you known each other?

I’ve known him for a few years, but we’ve worked together only since more than a year ago. It’s a very effective and well functioning cooperation thanks to Chris’ stance and musical professionalism. Chris already had many DJ gigs here and abroad as well before our friendship, and seeing the results and the effective cooperation, I’m sure we are going to release more work together for long years! J

Your remix of Yamin feat. Marcie – Desperate had many posotive feedbacks from oversea.

Our remix came out at Lyon Echo in 2008, beside Joel Armstrong’s one. We would have never thought, but it reached big successes on the sale charts.

You had some other own work, the Pray and Vibrations of Life, that came out at Cloud 9 Records. This label released records by for example Armin Van Buuren, Kaskade, Marcus Schulz and Above&Beyond. Were you closer to trance that time or just tried to find other ways in music?

Tommy Nash and Christian Slater.jpgTo create music, to produce new music is always interesting as you never know what it’s gonna be in the end. :) The tracks that were signed by Cloud 9 had more trance line than the others before. I tried myself in every fields where I could.

Both of you played twice at the Creamfields Festival before party in Poland. How were you chosen?

It was thanks to my very kind Polish friend who had already known my works. My promo got to the Polish Creamfields organizers, so we got an invitation to Wroclaw for the Creamfields before party around May, first to the club Lemoniada, then to the Metropolis. In the same year we got another chance to play at the closing party of Creamfields before nights. I don’t have to say, both gigs were memorable experiences. :)

How can you stand all of these? I’m sure it’s hard to manage everything, the releases, remixes, gigs, etc. :)

At the beginning it was very difficult to arrange with other things. Later you have to choose if you wanna be effective. So nowadays I daily deal with the music. The only way to get forward if you full concentrate for one thing and pay all your attention for it.

Then the bomb exploded… next stop was many people’s dream, the Global Underground. You had success here as well with Christian Slater as your ’Dreams’ tracks was released.

Well yes, if something is, it’s really every producer’s dream. It was a big recognition for us after lots of hard work. Honestly it happened so quick I couldn’t beleive or simply just understand it for a long time. Because there are so many great Hungarian artists who reached big successes in the world. We try to fill every requirements.

In the meantime you were requested to remix Anil Chawla&Dale Anderson’s ’Leftorium’ thatwas released last October. I think the conception was to introduce your name with a remix first. Or are there any other reason in the background?

It’s a huge label so would not be easy to find out their conception. Maybe as you said they wanted to familiarize our names with this remix. But we haven’t thought that this remix would lead the Global Underground sale chart so long. Anyway, the signed ’Dreams’ is coming out soon, and we’ve just got another contract from the label for another release, called ’Geisha’. And you can reckon with some other surprises from us. :)

How were the feedbacks like? Did you get more supporter?

We got both positive and negative feedbacks. It always can be happened. Some of the negative criticisms are baseless, but some of them can be very suggestive for an artist. And you can get more supporter, but enemies as well. But if you can handle these problems, you will come out well later.

We are close now to the last question of the interview. But I’m sure we will hear about you many times, so tell us about the future. Are you going to work together or keep the private musical sphere beside the cooperation?

It’s always hard to speak about the future, especially in this profession, among lots of unimpressionable factors. Of course we will have many collective releases and gigs with Chris, but independent works as well. The work can’t be stopped!  :)

What releases, gigs are expected from you in the close future?

Well, maybe this is the most difficult question. J You can plan, but never be sure what’s going to happen. I hope thid tendency will keep going and increase. And our releases will achive the same or more successes. What is sure…

The ’Fever’ is coming out at Cloud 9 about September. I trust in this record because already many thing owing to it. Later our collective records, the ’Dreams’ and the ’Geisha’ will be released by Global Underground. Of course we will try to inform you in time about every news, and I hope you will like our new works as well. And we are looking forward to hear your opinions and feedbacks! :)
