Interview - Tommyboy
Written by Magdi Murvai    Friday, 18 April 2008 15:17    PDF Print E-mail
TommiboyTommyboy has a career that goes back for almost two decades and has been working with the same attitude and power like in the beginning. Besides the famous Housematic mixes, nights and radio show, he has many own record labels, he is a constant guest of the best clubs and electronic music festivals in Hungary such as the Flört, the Korona or the Sing-Sing.

He started the first and now best ship parties called Boat Party, which is awaited by hundreads every year. Besides these he creates better and better house tracks. Also Tommyboy made the Mix CD 003 of Justmusic.fm. Now he is going to finish soon with his latest project: a new mix album the Housematic Sessions Vol.1.

Big things are going to be done at the studio… Housematic Sessions Vol 1. The title lets me think that this is a new series. Am I right?

Yes, It's a new series, according to the title, but it could be also called Justmusic mixed by Tommyboy. The concept is the same we represent the radio show in CD and also digital form. The digital version is very important because with it the mix can be bought on any part of the world, maybe this will create a decrease in the sales of the CD.

When and how did you come up with the idea of this disk?

Creating new issues is essential for every DJ, especially when it comes to the most popular radio show of Justmusic. The audience wants new tracks, just check out the amount of the mixes online or the number of listeners of Justmusic.fm. Your audience listens to you every week, but they need a mix that they can listen to over and over again in their cars.

What is your main goal with the new issue?

To create a new series which represents the atmosphere of the Housematic radio show. I would like the show and also the mix to reach more and more countries in a digital way. Maybe we will spare a place on the mixes for the guest mixers as we usually do in the second hour of the show. ( Housematic Guest Mix )

I ment my close producer and DJ partners also here in Hungary and abroad.

How do you imagine the disk in a musical way?Housematic.jpg

It is hard nowadays to concentrate your favorite tracks in 75 minutes, that's because there are so many great tracks coming out every day. I would definitely like to put myself in to this mix, so mostly my tracks, remixes and edits will make it varied. Besides myself I would like to also represent other Hungarian artists tracks like Mannels, Muzzaiks, Add2Baskets and also Lauer& Canards tracks are sure to be on the disk.

Are you working on it all by yourself?

I have to :-)

Which publisher will publish it?

It will be the issue if housematic, which is at its second issue now.

What “afterlife” will the disk have? (tours, appearances)

I hope the disk will have a lot of tour spots. At home we are going to take it to the clubs I've already visited, in foreign countries my south American promoter will organize a tour for it with Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Chile and so on. A new issue is always a good reason for a tour.

Please, lets talk about your past for a little bit! You just got back from Brazil. This wasn't your only trip overseas this year. What places did you visit exactly?

Sao Paulo , and Curitbaba. It was a short tour , with lots of traveling, but it was worth it. We are planning the Housematic session tour for October with more places to go.

Where are you going to appear abroad next time?

In May to Amsterdam for the Matthew Dekay Trousy 2 CD premiere, also to Italy Macedonia and Serbia.

During these there isn't a month when you don't produce a new track or remix. What was your last one?

.Different publishers come out with my stuff at different times, in most cases also I'm informed by e-mails or see them on webpages.

-Matthew Dekay : Second Life ( Tommyboy Remix ) ARMADA

-Chus Ceballos : Go on ( Tommyboy Remix ) STEREO

-Tommyboy & Mannel : Black Pearl DEEPER

-Sultan & Tommyboy - Come together STEREO

-Matthew Dekay - Timeless ( Tommyboy Remix )ARMADA

-Rene Amesz & Tommyboy presents Gate1: The Bottom ( Gotogate Records 001 )GOTOGATE

-Topazz : New Millenium ( Tommyboy 2008 remix ) PORNOSTAR

Also the remixes are coming.

-ROACH MOTEL : WILD PITCH ( TOMMYBOY REMIX )

-JULIE DENNIS : FEVER ( TOMMYBOY REMIX )

And so on…

Are you working on another project besides the Housematic Sessions?

I always work on more productions at a time, they make the other ones complete. Some times I a put a track away for months and than start to work with it again. The radio show, remixes and own productions can sometimes occupy me for 24 hours a day, sometimes I get fed up with listening to music.

I discovered that almost every time you're working with someone on a track. Why is this so? What do you enjoy in working with?

I also have own tracks and also tracks made with other people. Working together with someone is a huge inspiration especially when we mix genres. If you look at it almost everyone is working with someone else, they just don't always write this on the track. Everyone has his own little musical family, friends, who they enjoy working with. We don't use special stage names for these occasions we label those tracks with our own name.

Musical trends come and go, but not at your place. Forever house. This is your huge obsession isn't it?

It doesn't matter how you call it I like every type of music. The most important thing is it has to have something to say, with a little funk in it and also it has to move your imagination and your legs. I like deeper stuff from Bukem till techno, I'm interested in almost every genre. We still haven't talked about the 70's Soul, Funk, classics or the Hip-hop. So there are plenty of things to listen to especially now when there are so many fresh and interesting musical genres being born.

We can say, that you've been in the trade for two decades now. Have you had moments when you got sick and tired of the whole thing, and you were thinking to stop playing music? If so, what helped you over these hard times?

There weren't any moments like that. I always felt that the music helps me over the hard times. When I get fed up I travel away for a few days, but I always take a laptop with myself. .

And a final question because you're one of the most reliable sources what do you advise for the new generations who would like to become DJs ?

You have to be mad about music and love it. It is important to gather information about all genres and if you want to be a DJ be sure to always create own tracks, remixes, bootlegs.
